Village of Lewiston Board OKs several summer events

Board sets tax warrant, waives residency requirements

Trustees in the Village of Lewiston signed off on a series of summertime events as part of their work session on Monday. Included:

•Memorial Day will be observed from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, May 27. The Remembrance Committee’s request to close Center Street for a kickoff parade was approved, as was use of Academy Park to host a luncheon from 1-4 p.m.

•Be OK Studio will host yoga classes at Academy Park from 10-11 a.m. Saturdays, June 8, 15 and 29; July 13; and Aug. 3 and 17. Be OK will stage a wellness and vendor event from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Sunday, June 30.

•The YMCA Buffalo/Niagara also will hold yoga classes in Academy Park, from 10-11 a.m. Sundays, June 9, 16, 23; July 7 and 21; and Aug. 4, 11, 18 and 25.

•The Lewiston Council on the Arts will use Academy Park and the Alphonso I. DiMino Memorial Band Shell to host an Independence Day celebration with live music and dancing performances from 5 p.m. until dusk on Thursday, July 4.

Skylighters Fireworks will provide a pyrotechnic display later that night, at a cost of $15,800 (rain date: July 5).

•The Point Church will use Hennepin Park for “Church in the Park” from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Sunday, July 14; and for a church outreach event from 5-9:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2.

•A date change request for Bianca Falsetti’s previously approved vendor fair at Academy Park. The fundraiser was moved from June 21 to 5 p.m. Friday, July 19 (rain date: Saturday, July 20).

•Niagara Wine Trail’s Wine Festival returns to Academy Park from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 27, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 28. On Saturday, this event will run in conjunction with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra concert in the Alphonso I. DiMino Memorial Band Shell.

•The Upward Niagara Chamber of Commerce is already working on the annual Lewiston Christmas Walk. Events will take place the weekend of Dec. 6-8 in the International Peace Garden, Hennepin Park and Academy Park. Center Street will be closed from Fourth Street to Portage Road to host the Christmas Lights Parade on Sunday, Dec. 8.

Other approvals

•The Village Board approved a motion to authorize the levy of real property taxes for the 2024-25 tax warrant, directing the clerk to receive and collect taxes in the amount of $1,312,345; a re-levy of water and sewer charges in the amount of $19,738.16; and a miscellaneous re-levy of $740 for lawn care, for a total warrant to collect $1,332,823.16; and to establish the tax rate at $8.164858 per $1,000 of assessed value.

•Trustees voted to waive the residency requirement for the offices of clerk, deputy clerk and treasurer, pursuant to the authority of the Municipal Home Rule Law of the state of New York.
