Attorney General Letitia James announced the City of Buffalo received a grant of $800,000 in the second round of the "Community Land Trusts Capacity Building Initiative," which acquires and renovates distressed properties, as well as provide training and technical assistance to homeowners, and create permanent affordable housing for the benefit of low- and middle-income families.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded more than $314 million to 77 state and local government agencies, a record investment to protect children and families from lead-based paint and home health hazards. In addition, HUD is awarding more than $5 million to identify and address home health and safety hazards in six tribal communities.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is awarding $75 million to end youth homelessness in 23 local communities, including eight rural areas, across the country. HUD's youth homelessness demonstration program (YHDP) will help these communities to build local systems and will support a wide range of housing programs, including rapid rehousing, permanent supportive housing, transitional housing, and host homes.

The Out of Darkness Walk in Lockport will start with registration at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13. Walkers start at 1:30 p.m. and will journey one of two paths: one path on the south side following the Erie Canal for one mile and back, and the other on the north side following the canal for two miles and back. Participants will meet at the Lockport Locks Pavilion.

Congressman Brian Higgins announced the Department of Justice's National Institute of Justice (NIJ) awarded the University at Buffalo a grant award for $834,177 to conduct research on health effects experienced among police officers. The grant was awarded as part of the fiscal year 2019 Research and Evaluation in Safety, Health, and Wellness in the Criminal Justice System program under NIJ.

Congressman Brian Higgins on Wednesday joined Niagara Falls City School District Superintendent Mark Laurrie in announcing a federal grant through the U.S. Department of Education totaling over $2.49 million over a five-year grant period for Niagara Falls Schools. The award, over $498,000 annually, will put additional mental health resources in schools, increase community and family outreach, provide training to help teachers identify needs early, and expand the pipeline of mental health professionals into the school setting to reduce shortages.

DECinfo Locator has added two data layers - hunting on DEC-managed lands and wildlife management units - designed to help provide detailed mapping functions for hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts.
