Empower, a Niagara County-based not-for-profit service provider, was awarded the 2019 Partnership Award by the Western New York coalition of the Self-Advocacy Association of New York State Inc. at Developmental Disabilities Day on Thursday, May 30. Empower received this award for its involvement of people with disabilities in its daily operations, and creation of more opportunities for them to participate in the community.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced its participation in a campaign taking place at hundreds of water access sites throughout the Great Lakes region to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species. The "aquatic invasive species landing blitz" runs from June 28 to July 7, and will inform boaters and others of the risks of introducing and spreading aquatic invasive species (AIS).

North Tonawanda man & former grand juror admits to leaking grand jury information

U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy Jr. announced last Friday that Casey Lipps, 26, of North Tonawanda pleaded guilty before U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo to committing contempt of court by impermissibly leaking secret grand jury information. The charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison.

The USA Niagara Development Corp. board of directors (USAN) met Wednesday and voted to provide NFNY Hotel Management LLC with a $1 million grant for upgrades it made to transform the former Days Inn hotel on Main Street in Niagara Falls into a Wyndham Garden Inn hotel, adding new rooms, remodeling existing rooms and upgrading hotel amenities.

It was a big night of music Tuesday at Artpark, as the Lewiston venue presented a bill with Carl Palmer's ELP Legacy, John Lodge of The Moody Blues with guest vocalist Arthur Brown, Asia and YES. The "Royal Affair Tour" offered fast-paced set changes, but laid-back rock music, which led to a larger audience pop than in past weeks.

UB architect's latest 'habitecture' project uses dead tree to give new life to Australian landscape

What do you do with a dead, 400-year-old tree? If your specialty is animal architecture, you turn it into a living habitat/art project. That's what University at Buffalo architect Joyce Hwang did in collaboration with the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Parks and Conservation Service. Hwang's sculpture - aptly called "Life Support" - was officially dedicated June 18.
DEC announces progress in efforts to eradicate dangerous & invasive giant hogweed

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced statewide efforts to control giant hogweed are making substantial headway in eradicating this large, invasive, and dangerous plant. The giant hogweed program, managed by DEC's division of lands and forests, is in its 12th year and has eradicated the plants from 623 sites, with another 448 plant-free sites being monitored.

More Americans than ever recorded by AAA, nearly 49 million, are making plans to honor the red, white and blue with an Independence Day getaway this year. (AAA began tracking holiday travel in 2000.)
