On Monday, the New York State Senate passed the Driver's License Access and Privacy Act, also known as the "Green Light Bill," sponsored by Democrat Sen. Luis Sepúlveda. A press release said this move "will restore the right to obtain a license, regardless of immigration status, that existed prior to 2001.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Monday announced the New York State Thruway Authority Board of Directors approved the selection of the design-build team that will complete the installation of cashless tolling on the Thruway systemwide by the end of 2020. The $355.3 million investment will transform the Thruway system for the approximately 267 million motorists who travel the superhighway each year.

For decades, "Big Tobacco" has sold African American smokers on menthol-flavored cigarettes through targeted marketing campaigns. That's among the reasons why, in the U.S., black smokers who prefer menthols are 12% less likely to quit smoking compared to non-menthol users, according to the results of a newly published study.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced late last week that a successful CleanSweepNY collection was held this spring in Gowanda, Warsaw and Lockport. It was part of a targeted initiative in DEC's Region 9 office, which includes Allegany, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Erie, Niagara and Wyoming counties.

Anthropology students from SUNY Buffalo State College are spending time at Old Fort Niagara this month. They are participating in an archaeological field school that is actively excavating Building 428, a barracks spanning the years 1756-1813 near the North Redoubt. Built by the French in 1756, it disappears from maps and plans in 1814 without records of why or how. The barracks housed soldiers while they were garrisoned at the fort.

Jastrzemski presented a flag-raising ceremony on Friday, unveiling three new flagpoles in which U.S. military veterans who served in World War II, Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East raised the American, state and county flags in front of the county courthouse.

Earlier this year, Gov. Andrew Cuomo advocated for the repeal of the statute of limitations in all rape cases as part of his 2020 executive budget. The New York State Legislature did not adopt the legislation that would remove the five-year limit on the prosecution of rape in the second and third degree when the budget passed in April.

On Tuesday, the Niagara Greenway Commission determined the refurbishment of the U.S. Military Post Theater at Fort Niagara State Park was in keeping with the Greenway Plan's goals, principles and vision. Niagara Post Theater Inc. (NPT) is requesting $120,000 to repair the theater's ailing roof. The nonprofit group is slated to go before the Host Community Standing Committee in September for final approval.

The 10th annual "Festival of Fathers" will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, June 22, at the Hyde Park Splash Pad in Niagara Falls (corner of Hyde Park Boulevard and Pine Avenue). The festival, which is free and open to the public, will include games, prizes, snacks and crafts, as well as activities to engage children and parents together.
