Low demand and steady oil prices help pump prices stay down

By AAA of Western and Central New York

Today’s national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $3.45, no change from last Monday. One year ago, the price was $3.58. The New York state average is $3.58, down 2 cents from last Monday. A year ago, the NYS average was $3.70.

AAA Western and Central New York (AAA WCNY) reports the following averages:

√ Batavia – $3.53 (down 3 cents from last Monday)

√ Buffalo – $3.58 (down 3 cents from last Monday)

√ Elmira – $3.38 (down 1 cent from last Monday)

√ Ithaca – $3.64 (down 1 cent from last Monday)

√ Rochester – $3.61 (down 1 cent from last Monday)

√ Rome – $3.59 (down 1 cent from last Monday)

√ Syracuse – $3.55 (down 2 cents from last Monday)

√ Watertown – $3.62 (down 3 cents from last Monday)

Gasoline prices held steady at the national level while continuing to fall in New York, with the average for a gallon of regular down 2 cents from last week to $3.58. Oil prices have risen slightly this week, trading in the low- to mid-$80s barrel this morning. Steady oil prices, tepid demand, and increasing supply are the formula for gas prices to keep falling as summer arrives.

Diesel prices are relatively steady. The national average price for diesel is $3.79, up 2 cents from last Monday. The New York average is $4.25, down 1 cent from last Monday.

To conserve fuel, motorists should map routes, avoid peak traffic times like rush hour, and combine errands into one trip while using cruise control when possible. Drivers should also make sure tire pressure is at the vehicle’s recommended level for the best gas mileage, while removing any unnecessary and bulky items from the car since it takes more fuel to accelerate a heavy vehicle.
